Profile of voice specialization programs in Brazil: Characterization of program offerings and curricular structures

Perfil dos cursos de especialização em voz no Brasil: caracterização da oferta e das matrizes curriculares

Abstract

Purpose: to describe the availability and curricula of postgraduate specialization programs in Voice in Brazil.

Methods: a descriptive-exploratory study with publicly available data from the e-MEC and institutional websites in 2026. Active specialization programs in Voice with confirmed enrollment offerings were included. Institutional, academic, curricular, and program coordinator characteristics were analyzed. The quantitative data were analyzed using absolute and relative frequency, and the subject titles were analyzed using inductive thematic content analysis.

Results: of the 81 records identified, 25 were included. For-profit private institutions (84%), distance-learning (88%), and recently established courses (76%) predominated. The mean program duration was 7.5 months, with an average workload of 546 hours. Most coordinators were males (60%), held a specialization degree as their highest academic qualification (60%), and 32% were speech-language pathologists. Also, 323 course subjects were identified, primarily focused on professional, artistic, and singing voice (22.6%) and dysphonias and vocal pathologies (18.6%). Vocal assessment, diagnosis, and clinical investigation (3.7%), therapy and clinical practice in voice (5.3%) were less frequently represented.

Conclusion: the programs were characterized by the predominance of private institutions, recent expansion, and widespread adoption of distance education. Their curricula prioritized professional voice and vocal disorders, while assessment, diagnosis, and clinical intervention received comparatively less emphasis.

Resumo

Objetivo: descrever a oferta e as matrizes curriculares dos cursos de especialização em Voz no Brasil.

Métodos: estudo descritivo e exploratório, com dados públicos do e-MEC e sites institucionais, coletados em 2026. Incluíram-se cursos ativos na área de Voz com oferta confirmada. Foram analisadas características institucionais, acadêmicas, curriculares e dos coordenadores. Dados quantitativos foram analisados por meio de frequência absoluta e relativa, e os títulos das disciplinas por análise de conteúdo temática e indutiva.

Resultados: dos 81 registros identificados, 25 atenderam aos critérios de elegibilidade. Predominaram instituições privadas com fins lucrativos (84,0%), cursos à distância (88,0%) e implantação recente, até dois anos (76,0%). A duração média foi de 7,5 meses, com carga horária média de 546 horas. A maioria dos coordenadores era do sexo masculino (60%), tinha especialização como titulação máxima (60%) e 32% eram fonoaudiólogos. Identificou-se 323 disciplinas, concentradas em voz profissional, artística e cantada (22,6%) e disfonias e patologias vocais (18,6%). Avaliação, diagnóstico e propedêutica vocal (3,7%) e intervenção, terapia e prática clínica em voz (5,3%) foram menos frequentes.

Conclusão: os cursos caracterizam-se pela predominância privada, expansão recente e adoção da educação a distância. As matrizes priorizam voz profissional e alterações vocais, com menor representatividade de avaliação, diagnóstico e intervenção clínica.
