Abstract

Purpose: to develop a scoping review protocol to map the application of machine learning in the instrumental assessment of swallowing in adults and older adults.

Methods: the study will use the PCC strategy to construct its research question. The mnemonics will consist of participants (adults and older adults aged 18 years and older), concept (application of machine learning), and context (instrumental assessment of swallowing, using imaging exams, including ultrasound, videofluoroscopy of swallowing, computed tomography, videoendoscopy of swallowing, and esophageal manometry). The review will consider observational, experimental, and/or quasi-experimental studies and will exclude studies unavailable in full, animal studies, in vitro studies, letters to the editor, errata, study protocols, reviews, those that used imaging exams for purposes other than swallowing, and studies with people outside the defined age range. There will be no restrictions on language or publication period. Two independent, blind reviewers will select the studies, which will be searched in databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, LILACS, IEEE Xplore) and grey literature (e.g., Google Scholar, ProQuest, and MedRxiv), in addition to manual searches and mapping in grey literature. The analysis will consider the study design, sample size, age, type of imaging exam, and machine learning method/purpose. Data will be presented through diagrams, narratives, and tables.

Final Considerations: the literature has described machine learning applied to the instrumental assessment of swallowing, using imaging exams as an assessment tool for the analysis of static and dynamic images related to swallowing for different contexts and populations. This protocol will enable the development of a scoping review to map the applications of machine learning to the instrumental assessment of swallowing with imaging exams.
