Ableism and social inclusion of people with disabilities: An integrative review

Abstract

Purpose: to synthesize the literature on the influence of ableism on the social inclusion of people presented with disabilities.

Methods: this qualitative integrative review employed the acronym SPIDER to develop the central question. The articles were searched across seven information sources, utilizing a search strategy that incorporated descriptors and their respective synonyms. The articles located were entered into the Rayyan application, initially analyzing them by excluding duplicates and reading titles and abstracts. The ones selected were read in full. Following the inclusion criteria, 17 articles were defined and remained in the review. The results were analyzed qualitatively.

Literature Review: ableism is a form of oppression, preventing people from participating in society and exercising their rights. Functioning must be emphasized in contrast to capacity, and the identity of people with disabilities must be valued by using appropriate language and attitudes, without stereotypes.

Conclusion: ableist conceptions and attitudes cause distancing, segregation, and exclusion of people with disabilities, making it difficult to include them effectively in society.

Resumo

Objetivo: realizar uma síntese da literatura sobre a influência do capacitismo na inclusão social das pessoas com deficiência.

Métodos: este estudo é uma revisão integrativa com delineamento qualitativo. Para elaboração da pergunta central utilizou-se o acrônimo SPIDER. A pesquisa dos artigos foi realizada em sete fontes de informação, por meio de estratégia de busca com descritores e seus respectivos sinônimos. Os artigos localizados foram inseridos no aplicativo Rayyan. Para a análise dos artigos, foi feita inicialmente a exclusão das duplicidades e as leituras de títulos e resumos. Os artigos selecionados foram lidos na íntegra. De acordo com os critérios de inclusão foram definidos 17 artigos que permaneceram na revisão. Os resultados foram analisados de forma qualitativa.

Revisão da Literatura: os comportamentos capacitistas, que impedem a participação social das pessoas no exercício de seus direitos, são formas de opressão. Há a necessidade de enfatizar a funcionalidade em contrapartida à capacidade e valorizar a identidade da Pessoa com Deficiência no uso da linguagem e atitudes apropriadas e sem estereótipos.

Conclusão: as concepções e atitudes capacitistas causam o distanciamento, a segregação e a exclusão das Pessoas com Deficiência, dificultando a inclusão efetiva dessa população na vida em sociedade.
