Abstract

Purpose: to analyze the perception of undergraduate students in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences about the supervised internship in deafness, considering aspects such as expectations, sentimental, theoretical-practical relation, bonding and therapeutic practices.

Methods: a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study was carried out. Eight students of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences participated, four of them in supervised internship in deafness and four who had concluded this internship in the previous semester. Data were collected through a focus group and a questionnaire with open questions. The information obtained was analyzed by content analysis.

Results: the analysis of the data showed that the students initially had only theoretical knowledge and the difficulties arose due to the lack of clinical knowledge, leading them to seek the orientation of the teacher during supervision and also the articulation with the theoretical content already studied. The experience acquired during the internship provided theoretical-practical knowledge to work with the family, recognizing the importance of this knowledge for the therapeutic success and to deal with the expectations of both parties.

Conclusion: dealing with deafness having as objective the encouragement to expression and communication does not show itself as an easy task, but the difficulties have been worked and overcome according to the acquisition of new experiences, the support of the family and the creation of bond between student, child/adolescent and their families.
