Resumo
Objetivo: avaliar aspectos morfo-funcionais da mastigação em pacientes com dispepsia funcional, e verificar o recebimento de orientações sobre a função mastigatória.
Métodos: anamnese e avaliação morfo-funcional da mastigação de 30 indivíduos.
Resultados: a mordida frontal prevaleceu em 63,3% dos casos, a trituração predominantemente unilateral em 46,7%, os movimentos verticais e rotatórios em 76,7%, o ritmo lento em 96,7%, o volume grande em 50,0% e a presença de restos de alimento em 66,7%. Verificou-se que 80,0% apresentavam próteses/falhas dentárias, fato associado à presença de assimetria à palpação do masseter e temporal.
Conclusão: a mastigação caracterizou-se por ser predominantemente unilateral com movimentos verticais e rotatórios, ritmo lento, volume ingerido grande, lábios vedados, com sobras de alimento em cavidade oral e ausência de ruído. Foi encontrado alto percentual de falhas dentárias e uso de próteses, fato associado à assimetria de temporal e masseter. Menos da metade da amostra recebeu orientações médicas sobre mastigação.

Abstract
Purpose: to evaluate morpho-functional aspects of mastication in patients with functional dyspepsia and to verify the receipt of masticidal function's guidance.
Methods: anamnesis and morpho-functional evaluation of mastication done in 30 patients.
Results: During testing, the frontal bite predominated with 63.3%. The most frequent way of mastication was unilateral (46,7%) and most movements were vertical and rotational (76.,7%). The rhythm was classified as slow (96.7%) and the amount of food ingested as large (50,0%). The rest of food in the oral cavity was found in 66.7% of the patients. 80.0% of them used dental prosthesis and/or had dental failure, and this fact was associated with the presence of asymmetry during palpation of the masseter and temporal muscle.
Conclusion: mastication of patients with functional dyspepsia can be mainly described as unilateral with vertical and rotational movements, slow rhythm, large amount of food ingested, sealed lips, with rest of food in the oral cavity and no noise. High percentage of dental failure and use of dental prosthesis was verified, a fact that can be associated with the presence of asymmetry of the masseter and temporal muscle. Less than half of the individuals received medical guidance about mastication.
