Resumo
Objetivo: comparar o desempenho da mastigação de indivíduos que apertam e/ou rangem os dentes com o desempenho de indivíduos normais.
Métodos: participaram deste estudo 42 adultos de ambos os gêneros, com idade acima de 17 anos, sendo 24 bruxistas e 18 do grupo controle. Todos foram submetidos a uma avaliação fonoaudiológica com ênfase na mastigação e responderam a um questionário a respeito de seus hábitos alimentares.
Resultados: os resultados obtidos não mostraram diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos em relação à consistência alimentar preferida, presença de fadiga muscular ou mímica facial durante a mastigação. Por outro lado, encontrouse uma melhor trituração dos alimentos no grupo controle (p=0,03) e uma preferência pela mastigação unilateral no grupo dos bruxistas (p=0,047).
Conclusão: existem diferenças no resultado final da mastigação em relação à trituração do alimento, que foi inferior no do grupo dos bruxistas, além de apresentarem pequena amplitude, predominância do movimento vertical da mandíbula e mastigação unilateral.

Abstract
Purpose: to compare chewing development performance in subjects that press and/or creak the teeth with chewing development in normal subjects.
Methods: forty-two adults participated in these study of both sexes, with age above 17 years, with 24 bruxists and 18 pertaining to the control group. All subjects were assessed in masticatory test and answered a questionnaire concerning their nourishing habits.
Results: the results did not show any significant statistical difference among the groups with relation to the favorite nourishment consistence, presence of muscular fatigue or facial mimic during mastication process. However, better grinding of foods was found in the control group (p=0.03) and a preference for the unilateral mastication in the bruxist group (p=0.047).
Conclusion: there were differences in the final result concerning the masticatory act with relation to food grinding, it was worse in the bruxist group, besides presenting low amplitude, predominant vertical movements of jaw and unilateral mastication.
