Abstract
Purpose: to study the handmade measurements, aiming at quantifying the differences between hemifaces at unilateral peripheral facial paralysis (PFP), objectively comparing the paralyzed hemiface to the normal one.
Methods: two 30-patient groups have been studied. Group I comprising normal patients and group II involving those carrying PFP. The PFP “quantification” has been carried out by means of a digital pachymeter to obtain the measures in two facial movements: smile and nasal contraction.
Results: in group I no differences were found between the measures taken, when both sides of the face were compared. In group II there were found significant differences between the movements of the paralyzed hemiface when compared to those of the normal one.
CONCLUSION: handmade measurement with the digital pachymeter has rendered possible to objectively compare the differences between the movements during smile and nasal contraction, between the hemifaces in unilateral PFP individuals.
